builtin network resource pools vs user-defined resource pools

$

Couple of questions regarding these two types:

1. If you create user-defined pools and assign port groups to them, is the new percentage based on the number of shares out of the total ones assigned to any group in the pool or across both user and system defined pools regardless of where they're assigned.

For example in the defaults vm traffic is assigned 100 (high) shares while all the others get 50 (normal) such as fault tolerance, iscsi, management, nfs, vmotion, and replication traffic. However my port groups won't be using FT, NFS, iSCSI, or replication so my custom defined pools are: Management (25 shares), VMs (100), and vMotion (50). In the first scenario vmotion would get 50 out of 175 or 28.5% of the available bandwidth.

2. is the available bandwidth forced once multiple types of traffic exist or only once saturation exists across all uplinks? for example we have 6x1Gbps ports assigned to the dvSwitch. if vMotion only gets 28.5% based on shares will it be able to use more as long as the other traffic types aren't using all of the other 72.5% of the traffic. VM traffic may be the only other kind and using only 2Gbps leaving 4Gbps left. Could vMotion use those and just make sure it's never using so much that prevents from the VM traffic getting at least 57% (100/175)?

3. is QOS tagging only for outbound traffic or is the use of Network IO Control only apply to egress traffic? What are the practical effects of saying it only applies to outbound traffic? outbound to where? Off the host but not to another host?

4. if you create 4 user defined groups but only 2 of them have port groups assigned to them are the remaining unused user defined groups not counted towards the total number of shares to compare yours against?

For example userRG-1 has 25 shares, userRG-2 has 50 shares, userRG-3 has 50 shares, and userRG-4 has 25 shares. However port groups are only assigned to userRG-1 and userRG-3. are their respective percentages 25 out of 75 and 50 out of 75 or are they 25 out of 150 and 50 out of 150? Hopefully that math made sense.

Thanks!

if you are running version 1.74x, you should see a Refresh Icon on the ActionBar (top bar).

vMotion and Shared vs Local Storage

$

Greetings to All

In my book by Lowe he does not say much about local storage.

In fact its as if no one uses vSphere5 without an external storage array of some kind.

He indicates that "shared storage" is required for vMotion.

But I when I talked to a vMWare engineer he said local storage will work as shared storage.

Kind of confused here. I have seen this mentioned anywhere.

We have two new Dell servers with ESXi5.

They have 6 x 300G SAS6 drives each. This is our storage.

We want the ability to do vMotion between these two servers.

Can this be setup to be shared storage in vCenter Server or when adding a VM?

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone alert into Smarts... the alert event text is backwards

Anyone use Smarts as the MOM for events from vcops? Everyone I see shows the event text backward and that makes it confusing.

Most recent example is Noise above 81.0 > 68.8. Shouldnt that read Noise above 68.8. Current Value 81.0? Is there anyway to fix this on my local systems?

Configuring a VM with OS and Apps

Hi to everyone

I've read hundreds of pages in many documents and books about virtualizing Exchange 2010

They all discuss sizing for Exchange but there is no mention of the fact that it will sit on an OS that must first be sized.

When setting up a VM with WinSrv2008R2 for example do I just add what Exchange will need to what the server will need?

And once the VM is setup with Srv08 and Exch how is it that x amount of CPU and memory is allotted to Exchange alone?

It this something done in the server OS or the VM?

Funny this is never mentioned anywhere. Its like Exchange exists alone in a VM.

Thanks in advance.

Persona Management: Exactly when does "Show progress when downloading large files" appear?

Here's my setup within a GPO which affects my VMware pool: http://screencast.com/t/QvGspe65omhf

So..

a. They definitely get the settings.

b. Things are redirected a-ok for profile and Mydocs and test a-ok.

To test the highlighted item, "Show progress when downloading large files" .. I have done the following:

1. Inside the GPO, you can see I've set the threshold to 2MB.

2. I've copied an 18MB PDF file to my MyDocs as the user.

3. The machine is cleaned at logoff.

4. I log on again and see the PDF file.

5. When I click it, the file "Ghosts" (the technical term for the X that appears on the file as its downloading.)

6. Then, the file opens.

My expectation is that some kind of progress window appears when this setting is enabled and I'm downloading a file bigger than the threshold (2MB).

I don't see that at all.

Please advise. Thanks.

Difinitive disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault

Hi

Running ESXi 5.1 Update 1:

Looking for the definitive way of formatting the disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault  entry in the settings file. The VMWare KB simply says set it to true.  Helpful.  A number of blog posts and questions don't really help, and I simply don't have the time to go through all permutations.

So far I've seen:

disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault=TRUE

disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault="TRUE"

disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault=true

disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault="true"

disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault="True"

Can anyone who has this working please let me know what the entry actually should be?  How difficult is it to put an entry in a KB article to say -

"Add this to /etc/vmware/settings: disk.terminateVMOnPDLDefault=<whatever_format_it_should_be>" ?

For Info:  If one of our SANs fails, I need all VMs on the affected hosts to shut down.  No arguments, etc etc.  Just shut down.  I have the Misc.APD entries set, it worked once on a demo VM, but not on the production ones.  Kind of urgent - customer wants an answer.

Many thanks

(sorry if I sound sharp - bit stressed!)

I am running that version, and when in the Briefcase section I do not see a Refresh.  I have a Refresh when I am in my inbox but not in the Briefcase.

Afaik, VMware does support PowerCLI.

I don't think they support debugging a customer's script, but the PowerCLI product itself is supported.

I created some calls myself in the past.

The issue you are seeing is a known problem, there are a couple of threads in this community that report something similar.

Well I'll be.

Not a single mention of that in the book.

Is that an extra expenditure?

I don't see it on the install screen of the vCenter Server 5.1 install disk

Re: vMotion and Shared vs Local Storage

VMFS datastore visible on 3 of 6 hosts. Remaining 3 hosts see the LUN, status is Mounted, but datastore is not visible.

As the title suggests, all hosts see the LUNs... can't figure out the issue. Below is a capture of the vmkernel.log captured from the server as it was doing a Rescan (which results in a loop of activity in the logfile and lasts 10+ minutes with no change to the storage).

The SAN is preesnting the LUNs and successfully... so it has to be host side. In an act of desperation, yesterday I reinstalled ESXi on one of the troubled hosts. It was able to see the datastores. Today, they were no longer visible.

Thanks in advance for any help.
