vMotion and Shared vs Local Storage

In my book by Lowe he does not say much about local storage.

In fact its as if no one uses vSphere5 without an external storage array of some kind.

He indicates that "shared storage" is required for vMotion.

But I when I talked to a vMWare engineer he said local storage will work as shared storage.

Kind of confused here. I have seen this mentioned anywhere.

We have two new Dell servers with ESXi5.

They have 6 x 300G SAS6 drives each. This is our storage.

We want the ability to do vMotion between these two servers.

Can this be setup to be shared storage in vCenter Server or when adding a VM?
